Where Compassion Meets Action

Hooves on the Ground / Pezuñas en el Suelo began as a simple mission: to care for the free-roaming horses of Vieques with compassion, respect, and action. Founded by Betty and Sarah, the organization built its foundation on tireless work, long days in the field, and a deep love for the island’s animals and people.

Today, that legacy continues under the leadership of world-renowned veterinarian Dr. Samantha Shone and Bianca Malavolti, daughter of former president Sarah.

Dr. Sam brings decades of experience in equine medicine and a heart for prevention. Her focus is on keeping the island’s horses healthy through regular clinics, vaccinations, deworming, and emergency care — ensuring that illness and suffering are stopped before they start.

Bianca, a writer x creative director, is dedicated to using storytelling, education, and community engagement to expand awareness. Through her work, she aims to help visitors and residents alike understand both the beauty and the responsibility of sharing this island with its horses
.
Together, they’re building on the foundation Betty and Sarah created — expanding clinics, increasing access to care, and helping shape a future where every person who steps foot on Vieques understands how to coexist responsibly and compassionately.

Because caring for the horses isn’t just about animal welfare.
