Community Outreach

While it may appear that Vieques is home to wild horses, most of the herds are actually owned. We help them provide humane care with wellness checks, healthcare services, and information to help ensure their horses are happy and healthy.

Free Gelding Services

Though Vieques seemingly offers endless rolling hills and coastal plains for the horses to roam, there is actually an overpopulation of the herds. Gelding can help solve this problem but at $350 per horse, it can be cost prohibitive. Hooves on the Ground can help.

Emergency Care

Please drive slowly and carefully! Around every bend in the road there may be horses in danger of being struck by a vehicle. It is heartbreaking to report that we've had to respond to hundreds of such accidents. Often this results in the necessary euthanization of the horse, which is only performed by a veterinarian or police officer.

Rehabilitation

After providing emergency care to injured or diseased horses, many require rehabilitation. From locating a safe place for a horse to heal with medical treatment, food and water to exercising a horse in the buoyancy of the ocean, we help get the horses back up on their hooves and roaming free.

Malnourishment Mitigation

During dry times we often run across horses with obvious signs of malnourishment. We jump into action by setting out water and feed for horses in need in various sites around the island.

Free Tetanus Vaccinations

Horses can contract tetanus from the bacteria found in soil and droppings which entering a wound. Sadly it is a very painful condition which usually results in death. We make it our mission to administer tetanus vaccinations to as much of the horse population as we can.
